How much chlorine does this pool need?

Enter the pool size, your free chlorine and CYA. See the minimum chlorine for that CYA level and exactly how much liquid chlorine, cal-hypo or dichlor to add.

At this CYA, chlorine should stay at or above 3.8 ppm to keep sanitizing.

Questions

Why does CYA change how much chlorine I need?

Stabilizer (CYA) protects chlorine from sunlight but also holds much of it in reserve. The higher the CYA, the more free chlorine you need to keep sanitizing. A common rule is to keep free chlorine at or above 7.5% of CYA.

How much liquid chlorine raises 10,000 gallons by 1 ppm?

About 10 fluid ounces of 12.5% liquid chlorine, or about 13 ounces of 10%.

Which chlorine should I use?

Liquid chlorine adds nothing else to the water. Cal-hypo adds calcium and dichlor adds CYA, so they slowly change your balance over time.
